Charles C. Ware
From the 1889 Goodspeed History
Charles C. Ware, farmer, was born in Worcester County, Md., July 12, 1813, his parents being Hugh and Atlanta (Taylor) Ware. The father was of Scotch-Irish descent, and was born across the ocean, his early days having been spent in following the sea. He was a captain for many years, and was the owner of two ships, but died in the prime of his life, in 1820, at the age of forty-five years, his wife’s death occurring in 1828, at the age of forty-six. Their family consisted of nine children, the only living son, Charles C., receiving his education previous to his fourteenth year. He entered a wholesale hardware store in Philadelphia, Pa., where he remained until 1834, then came to St. Louis, and after clerking for a short time, opened a hardware store. He was unfortunate, however, in the choice of a partner, and soon closed out the business, and in 1838 came to Texas County, and opened a general mercantile store at Ellsworth. About two years later he sold out to an individual, who took the benefit of the bankrupt law, and cheated him out of all he had. Mr. Ware then engaged in hauling saw-logs, but soon became the owner of forty acres of timber land on which he settled, and engaged in clearing his land, and getting it under cultivation. He has been quite successful, notwithstanding several unfortunate business ventures, and is now the owner of about 400 acres of land, with about 100 acres under cultivation. October 15, 1840, he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Haines, nee Carter, by whom he has six children: William H., Mary A., Anne E., Rhoda J., Charles H. and Martha M. Mrs. Ware died on the 23d of May, 1852, and February 1, 1855, Mr. Ware wedded Miss Sarah Deweese, who was born in Massac County, Ill., March 7, 1837. The following are their children: Sarah F., John W., Solomon T., Minnie A., James W., Nancy C., Eunice L. J., William R., Isaac C., Frances C. and Benjamin F. Mr. Ware is a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
